“Louder than war” Interview (UK-Tuesday 1st may 2018) :

Kim Wilde: “Here Come The Aliens”

(by Eileen Shapiro)

louderwar

Kim Wilde, who holds the record for being the most charted solo female act of the 80’s, with seventeen UK Top 40 hit singles including her debut single, “Kids In America” has recently released her newest smash hit album, “Here Come The Aliens”. The release was inspired after having an encounter with a UFO in 2009, while sitting in her garden. She noticed a huge bright light behind a cloud, followed its source, and realized that the light was moving swiftly back and forth. She thought about it every day and it gave her the inspiration for the album.

The album is causing a massive worldwide buzz with hits including her fabulous single, “Kandy Krush”, an energetic dance tune that is taking over the planet. Aside from all of her prior hits including: “Kids In America”, You Keep Me Hangin’ On” and “Cambodia”, Kim has won numerous awards, such as the Brit Awards, has written books on gardening, and is a TV presenter. She has sold over 10 million albums, and 20 million singles.

She has just completed a massive UK tour and will be doing a number of festivals before she embarks on an enormous European tour in October. I shared questions and answers with her about her new release and was thrilled that she talked about Adam Ant during the interview….

Louder than War: Congrats on Kandy Krush it’s a fabulous new single…is it inspired by the game?

The title was a phrase that was everywhere on the tour bus when I was working on the song. A lot of the band were busy with their heads in their phones playing the game, so we thought it was a great way to tap into that phrase and flip it into something else.

You’ve done everything from music to TV, to DJing to gardening. Is there anything that you haven’t done that you still wish to accomplish?

I’ve written books about gardening, but I reckon there’s another book in me…maybe about the music business – we’ll have to wait and see. I’m probably going to be too busy for a while to do anything about it.

Was there an instance that changed the trajectory of your entire life?

Yes! In 2009 my husband and a friend of mine witnessed 2 incredible lights in the sky over Welwyn Garden City. There were many other witnesses locally and it made the Hatfield and Welwyn Times. It inspired the artwork of my new album ‘Here Come The Aliens’ as well as the first track on the album called ‘1969’ – you could also say that it changed the trajectory of my life as without that event, the new album, tour and radio play wouldn’t have happened!

If you could have your ultimate stage fantasy what would you need to happen?

It’s happening right now! I’ve always wanted to have 2 drummers in my band since I saw Adam & The Ants have 2 drummers back in the eighties.  Combined with my new found love of ‘space-age’ stage wear, I can honestly say that I’m living out my stage fantasies in 2018!

Is there a song on your new release that you’re most proud of, or that you like performing best?

I’m proud of the whole album and I love performing all of the new songs live, but 1969 is a real moment in the show that sums up the tour. That said, seeing the audience’s reaction to ‘Pop Don’t Stop’ live is truly humbling – it’s so amazing to have a new song get the kind of reaction we’re used to seeing for the older hits.

Is there any advice that you would give to your younger self-knowing everything you know now?

Always trust your instincts and don’t throw away your Doc Martin boots.

What’s the proudest moment in your career?

There have been many, but hearing my new songs on the radio again this year has been very special. It’s a tough industry and audiences often have short memories, but to discover there’s still people who want to buy my records has made me very proud and thankful.

What’s next for you?

We’ve just finished a big UK Tour – the first for 30 years, but there’s no rest just yet… we’re doing a number of festivals over the summer before setting off on our European Tour at the beginning of October.

The artsdesk.com review (UK-Wednesday 14th March 2018) :

artsdesk

(by Thomas H Green)

Kim Wilde : "Here Come The Aliens"

CD: Kim Wilde – Here Come the Aliens

The Eighties star blasts back to planet pop on a space capsule of polished frothiness

The production is somewhere between Def Leppard’s Hysteria, Pat Benatar and Wilde’s own early Eighties back catalogue.

It’s difficult to dislike Kim Wilde, whatever you think of her music. Even more so after her pissed Christmas sing-along on a tube train a few years back became a massive YouTube hit. Or how about her appearance at Download Festival in 2016 with thrash metallers Lawnmower Death? There’s something boisterous and everyday about Kim Wilde. She has that early Spice Girls thing, whether she’s acting raunchy or silly, of being a human woman you might really meet, and who’d be fun, rather than a plastic, photo-shopped, faux-sexy lollipop-head. Her new album, despite its faults, makes her seem even more likeable.

Wilde has retained star status in mainland Europe, especially Germany, but Here Come the Aliens is her first proper crack at the UK market in a couple of decades. It was recorded at RAK studios, where she recorded many of enormous 80s hits, and alongside her is long term right hand man and brother Ricky Wilde at the controls. The result is an ebullient outing, exploding with sugary kicks from the off. Opening cut “1969” is a belting electro-rocker which posits that extra-terrestrials may be our only chance to escape ecological cataclysm (“Maybe they’ll save us from the apocalypse when it comes/A revelation that will really blow our minds”!) and things only grow more epic from there.

There are monster pop songs on board, notably the Ritalin rush of “Pop Don’t Stop”, the Duran-alike “Yours Til the End” and the bubblegum heavy rock of “Addicted to You” and “Birthday”. Thump-the-air stadium slowies are also present, notably “Solstice” about a real life teenage suicide pact, and a there’s a preposterously portentous song about online trolling called “Cyber Nation War”. The latter showcases the album’s heavy-handedness in the lyric department, meanwhile production throughout is somewhere between Def Leppard’s Hysteria, Pat Benatar and Wilde’s own early Eighties back catalogue. This power ballad sheen isn’t to my taste but beneath it the quantity of glittery, catchy unabashed pop songs is remarkably high (at least for the first two thirds of the album, after which it rapidly drops off). Kim Wilde is on tour shortly and this lot will make a zippy addition to her performance armoury.

Kim Wilde: Here Come The Aliens (Wildeflower Records)

Kim Wilde’s first album since 1992 comes wrapped in a pulp-style, science fiction sleeve, its title apparently inspired by some huge lights that she saw flashing in the night sky a few years ago.Thirty-seven years on from her debut single Kids In America, Wilde’s surprisingly powerful pop voice still bubbles over with enthusiasm and a certain sly wit, from the opening 1969 – a glorious concoction of furious riffing, poppy synths and Wilde’s cry of: “They’re after me!”Pop Don’t Stop, a duet with her brother and producer Ricky, Kandy Krush and Stereo Shot mines a similar, radio-friendly vein before the echoey Solstice reminds us that she’s a decent ballad singer too.

Kim Wilde - Here Come The Aliens : Kim Wilde : "Here Come The Aliens"

(by Haylee Roebuck)

Multi-award-winning artist Kim Wilde burst onto the music scene in the early 80s with worldwide hit “Kids in America” and has never looked back. Fast forward to the present month, which will mark another milestone for the musician with the release of her latest offering Here Come The Aliens on March 16th. The opening track searches for the radio frequency with “1969.” It has this vintage kick to it, before Wilde’s recognisable and infectious vocals radiate through to an out of space galaxy. It is an upbeat feel good track which is delicious like candy and definitely sets the tone for the rest of the album. “Pop Don’t Stop” is next with its slow tempo and emotional innocence. It feels like a ballad in parts, before the chorus pops in and reveals its compelling true self.

Kandy Krush” follows with racy, rock vibes and pop undertones. This track has so much personality and is delectable to its core. It keeps pace through to the end while throwing in a soaring guitar solo for good measure. “Stereo Shot” is next and is home to electronic space sounds and mechanical tones. It is pure pleasure from start to finish and is ready to burst.

Yours Til’ The End” follows with seductive vocals and a lower tempo, which swirl around and captivate you. It is funky in parts, yet still delivers so much feeling. “Solstice” is next and it is simply divine. It resonates a changing of seasons and feelings; it is beautiful and quite extraordinary.

Birthday” drives in with a heavier, rock inspired intro with confidence and such positivity. You can imagine singing this song from the top of your lungs and feeling such a high you won’t want to come down from. “Addicted to You” is catchy, addictive and it runs through your veins. You soak every inch of it up while craving it and feeling such hunger. “Cyber Nation War” brings in a darker and murkier sound with the feeling of a battle or a war looming. You feel like the warriors are hiding behind their keyboards and not wanting confrontation.

A Different Story” brings a fusion of pop rock and distorted vocals together, which blend into one without second thought. It’s a track to catch the ears after just one listen. “Rock the Paradiso” bursts in with a faster tempo to rock out to. It dances forward with fun and party-esque vibes. It’s another feel good track with all the right elements.

Rosetta” draws the album to its close with sensual, calming and spiritual moves. It allows you to close your eyes and let the music seek out your destiny. Here Come The Aliens is a delicious pop-rock album with feel good waves riding through to make sure you arrive at your destination safely, while the unknown future awaits in the distance.

“We’ve been planning it for a couple of years now,” she insists, “and the album’s been out in the ether for several years – we started writing it in 2014 – we’ve spent a long time on it, but the timing seems right.”

Kim is self-releasing the album, something that the internet has made far easier than 35 years ago during her first flush of fame, and she talks enthusiastically about the opportunities being her own boss brings. “It’s not like the old days, when you were signed to a record company and there was so much pressure and time constraints. Releasing your own record brings a real freedom that is so much more creative, and that’s really exciting. Releasing it on my own record label, Wildeflower Records is crazy. I never thought I’d put a record out on my own label!”

KIM WILDE RELEASES ‘POP DON’T STOP’

(by RJ Frometa)

broadwayworld2

When pop moves on, it leaves some stars behind. For others – the ones who were in it for the music – it opens new avenues.

Kim Wilde’s return to recording isn’t a comeback, but it does mark a fresh start in the iconic singer’s extraordinary career. Proud of her past, but focused on the future, Kim has never stopped singing or selling out tours – she has played more shows in the past decade than ever before, finding fans in countries she never dreamed she’d visit and turning new generations on to her songs.

When she walked in to the famous RAK Studios last year to begin recording ‘Here Come The Aliens’ (her first new album of original material to have a UK release since 1992), Kim felt instantly at home. Not only because RAK was where, in 1981, she recorded ‘Kids In America’ and ‘Chequered Love’, the seminal singles that made her famous at the age of 21, but because making music is what Kim has always done.

Now, as then, Kim was produced by her brother Ricky Wilde, who also guests on lead single ‘Pop Don’t Stop’, the first time that the pair have duetted on record. A glorious blend of rock riffs, electro beats and Kim’s infectious effervescence, with an earworm chorus that would work in any decade, ‘Pop Don’t Stop’ is a celebration of the role pop has played in the siblings’ lives and a tribute to the power of a great melody.

“Ricky and I share the same passion for pop,” says Kim. “We grew up together with the same influences, we speak the same language when it comes to all things musical. Some love affairs never die and our love affair with pop continues to this day, stronger than ever in fact!”

That passion is apparent throughout ‘Here Come The Aliens’ – lyrically, musically and in the patently genuine joy with which Kim always sings. Named after a real-life Close Encounter that occurred in Kim’s back garden in 2009, the album contains 12 tracks of swagger and sweetness that delve in to disco, new wave, electro and glam rock, but are really just smart, stylish, arms-aloft pop.

From the slinky, stomp-along opener 1969, the thrill ride of raucous second single ‘Kandy Krush’ and the electro monster ‘Stereo Shot’ to the shimmering ballad ‘Solstice’, the addictive, riff-drenched ‘A Different Story’ and the boisterous ‘Birthday’, ‘Here Come The Aliens’ pairs Kim’s trademark lust for life with the strongest set of songs of her nearly 40 year career.

Vocally, Kim has never sounded better, the result of a hectic gig and festival schedule that has taken Kim and her six-strong band around the world for the past decade, playing not only her classic ‘80s tracks, but the hits she has continued to enjoy throughout Europe, Scandinavia and Asia up to the present day. In fact, it’s in Britain where Kim has been off the road the most.

“I’ve played more in the past 15 years than I did in the first two decades of my career,” says Kim, the UK’s most successful female pop star of the 80s, whose early tours included opening for David Bowie and Michael Jackson. “My band and I have headlined several tours abroad, but this is the first one for almost 30 years at home. But I’ve had fantastic experiences here touring with Rewind and Let’s Rock so our fans know that they have a very special place in my heart. I cannot wait to see them all up close and personal.”

A true family affair, ‘Here Come The Aliens’ was largely co-written by Kim and Ricky and also features her niece Scarlett, who has played in the band for a decade and sings and songwrites on the album. The multi-talented Scarlett is also responsible for the album’s phenomenal artwork.

“It’s easily the best artwork I’ve ever had and this is probably the album of which I’m most proud,” says Kim. “I can’t wait for people to hear it. It was made with a lot of love and supernatural energy.”

Kim Wilde interview: ‘Two million watched me drunk singing on the Tube’

telegraphpic

By Neil Mc Cornick (MUSIC CRITIC)

It’s certainly one way to stage a comeback. Back in 2012, Kim Wilde was a former Eighties pop star who had left fame behind to pursue a double career as a radio presenter and landscape gardener. But one night just before Christmas, she hurtled back into popular culture thanks to a drunken indiscretion. Coming back from a party on a London commuter train, sporting a pair of sparkly reindeer antlers, she launched into a slurred rendition of her first and most famous hit – 1981’s Kids in America – accompanied by her brother Ricky Wilde on guitar.

The performance was filmed by a fellow passenger, who placed it on YouTube, where the six-minute clip went viral. The then 52-year-old Wilde was mortified. “I was watching the viewing counter going up, and my future disappearing into a black hole,” she says.

Previous posts about that album :

That video was posted long time before on official Kim Wilde facebook page with Kim announcing her forthcoming studio album Here Come The Aliens and parts of the video of a Christmas special treat with Lawnmower Deth called “Secret Xmas Project”. According to the video, it seems that this “Secret Xmas Project” will be available as a download and on vinyl too only at the Wilde Wild Christmas Show at the O2 in Manchester on Friday 22nd December 2017. Maybe this Christmas collaboration between Kim Wilde & Lawnmower Deth will include a metal cover of Rockin’around the Christmas tree ?
